Southern Tasmania Economic Profile 2024

Strategy & Engagement

Background

As of 2023, Southern Tasmania is home to 295,917 residents and characterised by its natural beauty and diverse landscapes. Over the last five years, Southern Tasmania has welcomed almost 41,000 residents from across Australia and over 12,600 migrants from overseas. Since 2013, Southern Tasmania has experienced population growth, and the Tasmanian Planning Scheme has been rolled out to deliver consistency in the planning controls. The Southern Tasmanian Regional Land Use Strategy (STRLUS) is a broad policy document that was originally ratified in 2010 and amended in 2013 to facilitate and manage change, growth, and development within Southern Tasmania to 2035. To begin updating the STRLUS, understanding the economic profile of Southern Tasmania is essential.

Project Goals

The purpose of the engagement is to inform, support and provide relevant background material to inform policy and implementation of updates to the Southern Tasmania Regional Land Use Strategy. The information will be utilised to inform a preferred land use approach to housing our community and supporting economic and employment outcomes for the region.

REMPLAN’s Involvement

To support the Southern Tasmania Councils Authority, REMPLAN its inhouse software suite to create an economic profile of the Southern Tasmanian region.

Results

The economic profile highlighted that Southern Tasmania is estimated to generate $19.6 billion in value-added, $21.0 billion in gross regional product, and 135,652 jobs which accounts for more than half of all jobs in Tasmania.
