Background
The Tableland Food Ingredients (TFI) project introduces the world’s best practice of food manufacturing processes to the Glen Allyn Tea Factory to produce premium polyphenol and caffeine extracts from tea growth by Nerada Tea Estates on the Atherton Tablelands region in Far North Queensland.
The global functional foods market is growing at a faster rate than the overall food market. A functional ingredient is a compound that can be used in the manufacture of functional food products to give the final produce a desired health benefit.
The TFI Project will significantly transform the Glen Allyn Nerada Tea Factory’s current manufacturing capability. It is comprised of two phases:
The employment of new processing and packaging technologies contained in this project is the critical step in successfully developing these high-value functional ingredients.
Project Goals
The analysis has been undertaken on two phases of the TFI project including establishment and ongoing operational jobs and is based on data and information provided by Nerada Tea Estates. The purpose of the analysis is to estimate the economic impacts of the proposed TFI Project.
REMPLAN’s Involvement
REMPLAN conducted this EIA using our inhouse regional economic modelling and analysis system to estimate the economic impacts of the proposed TFI project. The modelling was then applied to regional economies of Far Noth Queensland and the State of Queensland.
Results
REMPLAN analysed the total economic impact of two phases of the TFI project to estimate the economic impacts of the project, including direct and indirect effects, in Far North Queensland. Economic impact modelling indicates that phase 1 of the TFI project will support $3.023 million in output, 8 short-term jobs, and $1.094 million in value-added, and phase 2 will support $4.780 million in output, 12 short-term jobs, and $1.642 million in value added.
